Small business loyalty
How to start a loyalty program for your small shop
You don’t need a big budget, a card printer or a points system to reward regulars. A small shop’s loyalty program can be one sentence long — and that’s exactly why it works.
Why a small shop needs one
Most neighbourhood shops live on regulars: the same people buying milk, getting a haircut or ordering tiffin week after week. When one of them starts going to the shop down the road, you usually don’t notice until months later.
A loyalty program gives regulars a small, clear reason to keep choosing you — and gives you a record of who comes and who has stopped.
Five steps to set it up
- 1
Pick one simple rule
Every N visits, one reward. “Every 6 visits, a free coffee” beats any table of points, levels and conditions.
- 2
Choose a reward you can afford
A small free item or service, not a free full bill. Something you sell often and that costs you little works best.
- 3
Decide how you’ll track visits
Paper cards get lost and are easy to fake. Tracking visits on the customer’s phone number is quick and keeps an honest record.
- 4
Tell every customer at the counter
One line while billing: “You’ve got your first stamp — 5 more and the next one’s free.” A counter poster helps people ask about it.
- 5
Bring back the ones who stop coming
Look at who hasn’t visited for a while and send them a friendly message. This is where a loyalty program pays for itself.
Picking the number of visits
Think about how often a regular comes. If they visit daily (milk, bread, newspaper), a reward every 8 to 10 visits still arrives within two weeks. If they come once a month (salon, optician), keep it to 3 to 5 visits so the reward doesn’t feel a year away.
A good test: a regular should reach their first reward within a month or two.
What a program for a small shop shouldn’t have
- Points and conversion rates — customers stop reading after “1 point per ₹10”.
- A separate app for customers to download — most never will.
- Sign-up forms, PINs or OTPs at a busy counter.
- A reward so big it hurts your margin, or so small nobody cares.
- Rules that change every month.
Doing it with Regularhood
Regularhood is built for exactly this. You set one rule — every N visits (3 to 10), one reward you choose. At the counter you type the customer’s phone number and tap Add visit. On the last visit the app says “Give the reward now”.
You also get a printable counter poster and a WhatsApp status image with your rule, a list of customers who haven’t come back with a ready “we miss you” message, and an export of customers and visits to a spreadsheet. It works on any phone, tablet or computer, and it’s free to start.
Questions
How much does a loyalty program cost a small shop?
The tool can be free — Regularhood is free to start. The real cost is the reward you give, so choose something you sell often that costs you little.
What is the best loyalty program for a small business?
The one your customers understand in one sentence and your staff can run without slowing the counter. A visit-based stamp card on the phone number is usually the simplest.
Should I give a discount or a free item?
A free item usually feels bigger to the customer than the same value as a discount, and it costs you less because you pay for it at your price, not the selling price.
Will my older customers be able to use it?
Yes. They don’t need a smartphone or an app. Their visits are counted on their phone number, and you see at the counter when a reward is due.
